I know this is fact, because the news tells me so.
I think the only problem with this is that I don’t really like the term “software engineer”.? Engineer is one of those buzzwords that people love to throw in their job titles.? I’m the first to admit that I don’t have an engineering […]

Utility Computing
Posted in Industry on Oct 15th, 2003
Here’s an interesting little editorial piece on “Utility Computing”. The basic idea behind this concept is to make IT work like electricity or water.. you just plug “something” into the wall, pay for it, and you get the goods, no problems.
What really caught my eye was the author.. a Senior VP over […]
Offshore IT outsourcing
Posted in Industry on Sep 15th, 2003
This article is an interesting read. It’s all about the true costs of outsourcing IT overseas.
The interesting thing about this article was that they mentioned United Technologies Corp as being one of the “leaders” of this practice. When I used to work for UTC (more specifically Pratt and Whitney) they were just starting […]

I’m also a member of the Sagent Technologies Class Action Lawsuit. A few years ago I followed a REALLY bad stock tip, and invested in these clowns (somewhere in the low thousands, I don’t exactly remember how much). My net investment 2 years later, after brokerage fees? -15 bucks. Ouch. […]

So the other day I get a message on my TiVo saying that I’m getting all these exciting new features, like the ability to view pictures and play mp3s from my computer on my tivo, which I will admit is a mostly useless display of tivo’s mighty linux muscle, but who cares I’m a giant […]

IBM text to speech technology
Posted in Industry on Mar 21st, 2003
This scientific american article (from Slashdot ) details research by IBM into giving computers the ability to generate human-like speech in real time. They even have a website set up where you can try this out. Cool stuff. Imagine suver.com with it’s very own voice.
Buy a new Dell Inspiron notebook, win a free trip to Riker’s!
Posted in Industry on Feb 12th, 2003
I find this endlessly amusing.. The “Dude you’re getting a Dell” guy, Ben Curtis,
was busted on 2/9 for misdemeanor marijuna possesion, on the lower east side.
Here’s a recent picture of him tending to his stash:
I also noticed that Dell yanked his Webpage. I guess marijuana did more than any of us thought. […]
