Meet the Feebles (1989)
Starring:
A cast of the most foul-mouthed, perverted, sexually deviant, wonderfully inappropriate puppets you’re ever likely to see on the silver screen.
Directed by:
Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Heavenly Creatures, Bad Taste)
Brief Plot Outline:
A TV variety show named “Meet the Feebles” stars an overweight Hippo named Heidi, whose husband, Bletch the Walrus (who runs the show), is having an affair. At the same time, a naive porcupine joins the show and falls head over heals in love for a poodle, who later gets cast in a porno flick, which clearly threatens their love. There’s more to it, but you get the general idea.
Comments:
Anyone who has seen Peter Jackson’s first film, Bad Taste, will have some idea what they are in for. It’s just REALLY weird, like in a sick, messed up way. If the irreverent wit of Jim Henson’s Muppets gives you the warm fuzzies, please don’t go see this. Topics like sex (think cat vs. walrus here, folks), rampant drug use, violence and murder are strewn thoughout. And, like Bad Taste, everything seems to secrete fluids of one form or another. If junky anteaters that freebase women’s panties are your cup of tea, rent it immediately.
I really enjoyed watching it. If nothing else, it will really let you appreciate Peter Jackson’s imagination.
Score:
Although I had fun watching it, from a technical standpoint the movie was actually pretty awful. It was super low budget, and it showed. I think if you tried to rate this movie on technical merits you’d be wasting your time, and missing the point. The whole point is that it’s supposed to be stupid, sick, funny and tongue-in-cheek. It wants to shock you, and it does a great job.
That being said, let’s just face facts: puppets that swear alot and do horrible things is always comic gold.
It gets full marks.
